First Voyage 0f 2007

Freshly on the coast after nine months of disturbing the peace we left Salmon Point Marina at 6:00 PM sharp bound for Powell River. The late departure was due to the extreme tide that held us captive in the marina until the waters rose sufficiently to permit exit.

Interestingly enough diesel mechanics shut the fuel lines off while working on the engine. There was enough fuel in the lines to warm up the engine and place us precariously in 7 foot waves 100 feet from the rocky shoreline before shutting down. That reminds us, just because it’s hot, sunny and calm in the marina, doesn’t mean you should forego the weather report. Oh, no time to talk right now, we’ve gotta get the kicker running.

“You tried the kicker right Stephen?”

“I thought you tried the kicker Laurie!”

“Oh well, it started well last year…….didn’t it?”

Up with the engine hatch, open the fuel lines and a quick look at the GPS – Oh god our GPS says we are in Telegraph Cove….at least the depth sounder works. Five hours later, we had completed our ‘zip’ to Powell River. Thank god for the full moon.

A days lay over to look around Powell River and then it was up Jervis Inlet for 46 miles to the Malibu Rapids which spit us into beautiful Princess Louisa Inlet where we stayed the night at Chatterbox Falls.

Pender Harbour was our next destination where we stayed the night at one of the 3 public docks. A cruise through the many harbours shows how many marinas have been bought by private clubs or developed into private marinas with adjoining house lots. Construction is at a furious pace. Money seems to be no object. Good-bye to a quaint little coastal village!

Our next night was spent in beautiful Lund. A small harbour with a delightful mix of quality amentities.

A rough trip to Campbell River but not has harrowing as the trip over. We spent the day in Campbell River, waiting for the tide to rise to permit entrance into our marina.

Other things we know:

Ø The new hot water heater is plumbed in….but no hot water or Icold water!

Ø We love to putt along checking out the coastline and particularly estuaries at low tide on a search for wildlife.

Ø Maverick attracts attention and admirers no matter where he goes

Ø Margaritas taste especially good in Powell River on the veranda of the Mexican restaurant.

• It is very bouncy in Lund Harbour. Do not close your eyes while showering even on land!
